Landt beats Gardiner for Parks
Former Ashland Parks and Recreation Commissioner Rick Landt defeated current Parks Commissioner Mike Gardiner, earning 55.39 percent of the vote, or 2,552 votes, to Gardiner's 44.02 percent, or 2,028 votes.
Landt campaigned on a pledge to try to reduce maintenance costs for the Ashland parks system by changing current practices and designing new parks to be low-maintenance. He served on the Parks Commission from 1998 to 2002.
"People wanted to see us rein in costs without compromising our great parks system," Landt said.
He praised Gardiner's long service to Ashland, which included time on the Ashland Planning Commission as well as on the Parks Commission.
"I really respect him," Landt said of Gardiner. "He's given a lot to the community. I want him to get his due."
