Five compete for three council seats

JACKSONVILLE — Five candidates, with local government experience ranging from four decades to none and ages from 37 to 87, are vying for three at-large, four-year terms on the town’s City Council in Nov. 4 balloting.

Two former mayors, incumbent Councilor Jim Lewis and Clara Wendt, are among the candidates. Brad Bennington serves on planning commissions and Ken Gregg is on a citizens advisory committee. Ted Trujillo is a political novice but is active in a charter school.

Incoming council members will face major funding issues, including notching of the city’s reservoir dam. The city has $200,000 set aside, but work is estimated at $500,000. Another issue is the proposed remodeling of the courthouse for city office use, for which $1 million in urban renewal funds has been approved.
