Schlitt's 'Patriot Act' comes to SOU

Southern Oregon University will host two performances of Mike Schlitt's "Patriot Act,” a 50-minute roller-coaster ride through American history.

The performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, in Room 103 of Cascade Hall (seating limited) and 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, in the Music Recital Hall. Each performance will be followed by a 30-minute audience engagement session. Admission is free.

Schlitt is a founding member of the Actor’s Gang Theatre and a two-time winner of the New York International Fringe Festival’s Outstanding Solo Performance award.

Schlitt starts the show with a countdown clock, then tells his story with the help of puppet sidekicks named Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. Schlitt says his story exposes the gap between the promise of America and its “flawed” execution.

Schlitt and his producers, Ashley Sparks and Kevin Corstange, will conduct workshops between performances for SOU history and theater students, and the students also will perform after the Thursday-night show. Sparks will conduct a 90-minute workshop Thursday in Cascade 103 titled "How to Show up as a White Person in Conversations on Racial Equity."
