Link wins appeal for resentencing

BEND — A defendant in the 2001 Redmond Five murder case has the chance to someday leave prison.

Justin Link had been serving a term of life in prison without parole for the killing of Barbara Thomas of Redmond. He was among five teenagers, including the son of Thomas, convicted in the case.

Link won an appeal and the case returned to Deschutes County for resentencing.

District Attorney John Hummel said Friday that Link has been resentenced and will be eligible for parole after he completes 30 years. So far, he's been behind bars for 15 years.

Link was 17 when he and the others plotted ways to kill Thomas and use her car to get to Canada. They considered electrocution, drowning and injecting her with bleach. They ended up beating her with wine bottles and shooting her with a rifle.
