Two children critical after crash
Two children were in critical condition Wednesday following a Tuesday-evening crash at Jerome Prairie Road and Midway Avenue.
The youngsters were riding in a Toyota 4Runner that ran a stop sign and was broadsided by a 2000 Dodge Ram pickup truck, according to a press release from the Josephine County Sheriff's Office.
The driver of the Toyota, Desiree Dawson, and her three children were initially taken to Asante Three Rivers Medical Center in Grants Pass. Two of the children were then taken to Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland, where they are listed in critical condition.
The driver of the truck, Glenn Terpening, had unknown injuries and was taken to Three Rivers. The crash, just before 6 p.m., sent the 4Runner into a ditch.
A good Samaritan helped at the scene, comforting one of the children in the back seat. Austin Prince, division chief for Rural/Metro Fire Department, said the unidentified assistant also had a medical background.
"The calm, confident and caring actions shown (to) the young patient was truly comforting in such a traumatic event," Prince said in a news release. "Thank you!"
Other bystanders also helped at the scene.
