Five picks for live entertainment
The 2017 Medford Cruise kicks off with a poker run and stoplight drags at Champion Raceway on Friday, June 16, along with live music by East Main Band and Sound Stage Review at 7:30 p.m. in Fichtner-Mainwaring Park, off Holly Street and Stewart Avenue, Medford. On Saturday, June 17, a '79 and older car show will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the park. It's $50 to register from 7 to 10 a.m. An '80 and newer car show will also be at the park. It's $30 to register. The annual downtown cruise will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Moonlight drags at the raceway begin at 8 p.m., and a drive-in style movie, "Grease," will be shown at dusk in the park. The Oregon Shakespeare Festival will commemorate the end of slavery in America with spoken word, dance, music, hip hop, visual art and theater excerpts at noon on Monday, June 19, on its outdoor Courtyard Stage on the OSF campus, 15 S. Pioneer St., Ashland. On June 19, 1865, Major-General Gordon Granger led his Union soldiers into Galveston, Texas, with the news that the Civil War had ended and slavery abolished. OSF has celebrated Juneteenth since 1998, when actor Aldo Billingslea, originally from Texas, hosted a fundraising barbecue to help African-American students attend the OSF Institute’s annual Summer Seminar for High School Juniors. The event is free, but donations will be accepted for the Juneteenth Scholarship Fund.
Summer Concert Series
Free outdoor concerts are set for 7 p.m. Wednesdays in the Bear Creek Amphitheater at Bear Creek Park, corner of Siskiyou Boulevard and Highland Drive, Medford.
