Body found June 22 near Illinois River identified

A man found dead on a trail near the Illinois River in Josephine County June 22 has been identified as John William Reitterer, 22, of Crescent City, California.

The body was located near the Snailback Beach Trail outside Selma, according Oregon State Police.

No other details about the case, including cause of death, were released. But an earlier report said the man did not drown.

Illinois Valley Fire District crews were dispatched at 2:17 p.m. June 22 to what was initially listed as a water rescue in the Snailback Trail area, about four miles west of the Redwood Highway on U.S. Forest Service land.

Rescue crews confirmed the person was dead and law enforcement personnel took over, according to IV Fire spokesman Jason Bayless, who told the Grants Pass Daily Courier the body was found in the water.

"This is an active death investigation so I am unable to release much at this point, " OSP Lt. Cari Boyd told the Daily Courier June 23. "We are conducting a death investigation, however this was not a drowning.

"The victim was located in a creek that flows into the Illinois River approximately 300 yards from the river."

Josephine County sheriff's deputies and OSP personnel responded to the scene.
