Hula for the Holidays
Light up winter with the warmth of aloha when hula school Ka Pi’o O Ke Anuenue presents a holiday-themed hula show at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, at Ashland Community Center, 59 Winburn Way, across from Lithia Park. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., and a buffet of traditional Hawaiian food — pulled pork, lomilomi salmon, tofu poke, potato and macaroni salad, rice, green salad and haupia, a dessert made with coconut milk — will be served from 5 to 6 p.m. Aaron Ortega will play ukulele and sing Hawaiian songs. The show begins at 5:30 p.m. and includes holiday hulas such as "Christmas Luau, "Here Comes Santa in a Red Canoe," "Mele Kalikimaka" and "Hawaiian Santa," along with hulas to holiday standards such as "White Christmas" and "Winter Wonderland." Tickets are $10 for the show only, $17 for dinner and the show, and can be purchased at the door.
Southern Oregon Repertory Singers
The choir, directed by Paul French, will present "The Snow Lay Deep on the Ground," a program of festive music to include works by a range of Renaissance, classic and contemporary composers, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, in the Music Recital Hall, 405 S. Mountain Ave., at Southern Oregon University in Ashland. The program will include an appearance by North Medford High School's Chamber Choir and carols from around the world. Musicologist Ed Wight will present a free lecture one hour before each concert in Room 132 of the SOU Music Building. Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon Alumni Concert
Members of Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon and featured alumni soloists, led by Cynthia Hutton, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, at the Craterian Theater, 23 S. Central Ave., Medford. Look for alumni Abby Young on violin; Gabe Young on saxophone; Shaina Evoniuk on electric and acoustic violin; and Heidi Strahm Smith and Kathleen Strahm on violins. The program will include works by J.S. Bach, Steve Reich, Tchaikovsky, Richard Wagner, Beethoven, Leroy Anderson and Mark Jacobs. Eva Thiemann's 'Owls'
Rogue Valley artist Eva Thiemann's oil paintings are rendered images of great gray owls observed around Howard Prairie Lake. The 10 paintings will be displayed through December at Belle Fiore Winery, 100 Belle Fiore Lane (off Dead Indian Memorial Road), Ashland, and through January and February at Creekside Pizza Bistro, 92 N.
