RRMC named in top 100 hospitals nationwide

Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford has been named one of the top 100 hospitals in the nation by the health care technology company IBM Watson Health.

IBM Watson Health analyzed publicly available clinical, operational and patient satisfaction data for 2,740 hospitals to select the top 100 hospitals for 2018.

RRMC was the only hospital in Oregon and Washington to be named to the list. California has six hospitals on the list, including the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

RRMC made the top 100 list for the fifth year in a row and the sixth time overall, according to hospital officials.

IBM Watson Health, formerly known as Truven Health Analytics, has produced its list of winners for 25 years.

According to the data, hospitals listed among the top 100 outperformed other hospitals on key performance measures, showing better survival rates, fewer complications and infections, shorter lengths of stay, shorter emergency department wait times, lower inpatient expenses, higher profit margins and higher patient satisfaction scores.

"Improving quality and efficiency helps keep costs down for patients, resulting in a better experience for them and hospitals alike,” Dr. Jamie Grebosky, Asante’s chief quality and patient safety officer, said in a statement. "It’s a win-win for patients and Asante as we transition to a model of care that’s based on patient-centered outcomes rather than the volume of procedures or the number of patients we provide care (for)."

The IBM Watson Health study projects that if all Medicare inpatients cared for in United States hospitals received the same level of care as those treated in the award-winning facilities, more than 102,000 additional lives could be saved, 43,000 more patients could be free of complications, and approximately 200,000 fewer discharged patients would be readmitted within 30 days.

More than $4.4 billion in spending on inpatients costs could be avoided as well, the study found.
