Myrtle Creek roofer wins $50,000

A Myrtle Creek roofer pulled in $50,004 total in Powerball prizes by playing the same numbers he has played for years: his family members' birthdays.

The number limit imposed by the length of a month kept Robert Staley from matching one number, which stood between him and the jackpot.

"We hit all the birthdays, but the number we missed was a 32," he told the Oregon Lottery. "Hard to win when there isn't a month with 32 days in it. But they hit, and so we will take it!"

A release from the Oregon Lottery said that the winning numbers from the Feb. 23 drawing were 04-06-14-20-32 with a Powerball of 13. Besides the 32, Staley hit all the other numbers, landing his a $50,000 prize and an additional $4.

“Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice to win $50,000, but it really messes with you that you were one number away,” said Staley, who re-roofs houses on the coast.

Staley told the lottery that he will pay off his house with his prize money.
