One dead in fiery crash outside Grants Pass

One motorist is dead following a fiery crash outside Grants Pass that spread flames into nearby wildlands.

Shortly after midnight Wednesday, a motorist spotted an SUV off the road and on fire near Shan Creek in the 300 block of Limpy Creek Road, according to a news release from the Josephine County Sheriff’s office.

The SUV had been burning for some time before the 911 caller discovered the vehicle. According to the preliminary investigation, the SUV left the road at a high rate of speed and struck multiple trees.

The wildfire spread to nearby brush, but was contained to the scene.

The sheriff’s office was still working Wednesday to identify the driver, whose remains were found in the vehicle.
