Cutoff fire 23% contained

inciweb photoFirefighters mop up Tuesday inside the perimeter of the Cutoff fire near Bonanza, which has burned 1,150 acres.

BONANZA — Firefighters were able to make headway on containing the Cutoff fire in spite of Tuesday’s thunderstorms. The estimated size held firm Tuesday at 1,150 acres.

Crews plan to continue to strengthen the containment lines Wednesday until the fire reaches full containment and to mop-up 150 feet into the fire’s perimeter.

An infrared drone will fly over the fire Wednesday night to map hot spots near the fire’s perimeter, which is the biggest threat to having the fire spread. Members of the public are not allowed to fly drones near wildfires.

So far, 22 structures have been destroyed and 237 people have been evacuated. More than 120 structures are still threatened.

A Level 2 “Get Set” evacuation is still in effect for the area east of Bly Mountain Cutoff Road, between Jaguar Lane/Racoon Lane and Spaniel Lane/ Crocodile Lane, west of Thrasher Drive, and a Level 1 “Get Ready” notice is in place for other areas.

The anticipated containment date is June 29. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
