Southern Oregon events recall Sept. 11

file photo Crews from Medford Fire-Rescue climb the stairs at the Rogue Valley Manor to remember the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

From a Grants Pass event in which emergency first-responders will walk for more than an hour in their protective gear to remember the rescuers who lost their lives in New York, to a brief remembrance ceremony in front of the Medford airport, Southern Oregon residents will have multiple ways to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

20th Anniversary First-Responder Memorial Walk

First-responders — including structural firefighters encouraged to wear their full protective fire gear and self-contained breathing apparatus — will walk for more than an hour starting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Allen Dale Elementary School track at 2320 Williams Highway in Grants Pass.

The walk will symbolize the 73 minutes between when the first plane struck the World Trade Center and the collapse of the South Tower, and is meant to honor the rescue personnel who risked and sacrificed their lives during those minutes.

Memorial ceremony at Medford airport

The Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Non-Commissioned Officers Association will hold a brief remembrance ceremony at 8:15 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport, 1000 Terminal Loop Parkway in Medford.

Veterans are asked to wear their colors for the event, and everyone attending is asked to show up at least 15 minutes before the event begins.

For more information, contact Terry Hines, chairman of the NCOA Rogue Chapter, at 541-601-8467.

Following the rides, there will be live music from Mercy featuring Lynda Morrison, and all proceeds will benefit the Rogue River Students scholarship fund. Call 541-761-1379 or see facebook.com/VFWAuxiliary4116PatriotsRun.
