Douglas County corrections deputy dies while off duty
Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin announced Thursday that a deputy serving Douglas County has died.
Hanlin described the death of Deputy Matthew Harmon -- who passed away at home on Tuesday following a sudden cardiac medical event while off duty -- as an unexpected event that has left him saddened.
Harmon, 53, began serving with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in March of 2003 as a reserve deputy. He began working full-time in the Corrections Division in April of 2010 and continued working as a corrections deputy until his death this week.
He also served as the work crew supervisor from 2017 to 2019.
“Matt was a valued and dedicated deputy who served with honor and distinction. He was a genuine person and will be sorely missed by everyone here at the Sheriff’s Office.” Hanlin said.
The Sheriff’s Office is coordinating with Harmon’s wife and family to plan memorial services, which will be announced at a later time.
“Our sincere thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Harmon’s family during this difficult time of loss,” Hanlin also stated.
