Medford opens cold weather shelter for Thursday night

Owing to forecast freezing temperatures, the city of Medford will expand cold weather shelter availability Thursday evening.

A Severe Weather Event shelter will be open from 5:30 p.m. Thursday through 8:30 a.m. Friday at the Navigation Center, 685 Market St. in Medford, according to a release from the city.

Access will coordinate shelter services at the city owned building such as meals, bedding and dry storage during the Thursday night cold weather.

The city declares Severe Weather Events when forecasts call for temperatures to fall below 25 degrees Fahrenheit, or when meteorologists anticipate temperatures below 32 degrees mixed with wind and precipitation, then works with community service organizations equipped to staff and operate the shelter.

Anyone interested in helping the shelter program through volunteering or donations is asked to email medfordemergencyshelter@gmail.com or mrogers@accesshelps.org.

For more information on becoming an approved severe weather or temporary shelter facility, call Deputy Fire Marshal Tanner Farrington at 541-774-2300.
