Rogue River man arrested in Saturday homicide

A Rogue River man is in the Josephine County Jail on a murder charge in the wake of a Grants Pass death investigation that closed a major thoroughfare overnight Saturday.

Paul Simeon Dayton, 42, was arrested for second-degree murder in the death of 39-year-old Tobias Devin Johnson of Grants Pass, according to a press release issued Sunday by Grants Pass police.

Johnson was found unconscious and bleeding about 9:15 p.m. Saturday on the sidewalk near Flespy’s Bar and Grill in the 600 block of Fruitdale Drive, according to police. First responders with Grants Pass Fire Rescue and AMR ambulance service paramedics attempted lifesaving measures, but pronounced Johnson dead at the scene.

Detectives linked Dayton to the crime and got a search warrant for his residence in the Wards Creek Road area of Rogue River, according to police.

Police, aided by a Jackson County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team and a crisis negotiation team, took Dayton into custody without incident, the release said.

Dayton was being held Monday in the Josephine County Jail without bail.
