Three robotics teams from Jackson County are headed to the Portland area to compete with top teams from across the state after taking top honors at a regional competition in Roseburg earlier this month.

Two teams from St. Mary’s School in Medford and one team from Rogue River High School will advance to a state competition next month after wins at the Southern Oregon Area Robotics FIRST Tech Challenge League Tournament held Feb. 5 at Roseburg High School, according to results from the competition provided by Michele Zimmer, St. Mary’s Technology and Engineering Department chair and robotics coordinator.

“I’m super proud of these teams,” Zimmer wrote in an email. “They put in a lot of work to get where they are.”

In a set of 25 matches, the Jackson County teams faced a dozen others from across the region, including teams from Roseburg, Coquille, Elkton and a team from the Calapooia 4-H club in Douglas County. The winner of each set played the other, and the best of three matches determined the winning alliances.

Rogue River team Frog Force — composed of students Kari Morales, Emilie Henderson, Axe Christensen, Isabelle Yauch and Katie Mack — won the first-place alliance at the regional tournament, qualifying them to compete that the state tournament to be held March 12-13 at Liberty High School in Beaverton.

St. Mary’s Pulsar team included students Jackson Lopiano, Artie Brubaker, Soomin Kim, Audrey Mills, Tony (Chuang) Wang, Alex (Xian) Xu, Finnegan Hecox, Landus Ho, Esse (Subin) Lee, Alex (Seok-Yeong) Park and John Shaughnessy.

St. Mary’s Quasar team included students Elliot Zimmer, Alex Wilk, Zyris Zacha, Ethan Cano, Jackeline Watts, Vanessa Lim, Cody Arnold, Haley Brown, Martin Camarillo, Dylan Daneman, Sunga Kim, Jiwoo Son, Spencer Patten and Trent Thuren.
