People’s Bank of Commerce opened a bank branch in Jacksonville this month, helping to fill a gap in in-person banking services after two other banking chains closed their branches in the small town.

Headquartered in Medford, People’s Bank made it a priority to open a new branch as quickly as possible after the departure of US Bank and Umpqua Bank, said People’s Bank President Julia Beattie.

"We are excited to have been able to open this branch sooner than we previously expected,” Beattie said.

US Bank closed its Jacksonville branch in 2020, and Umpqua Bank shut down its branch in 2021, leaving only Chase Bank for in-person services in the town of 2,900 people.

In a 2021 letter to customers, Umpqua Bank said it was adapting “to the reality that people visit store locations less and less and now do most of their day-to-day banking by computer or phone. As a result, we’ve been consolidating our number of stores the past few years based on a variety of factors, such as overall foot traffic and proximity to other locations.”

Beattie said many people still want to use an in-person bank.

“There is a true need to have a bank branch. A lot of people conduct their typical banking needs in person,” she said. “They prefer to go into a bank and actually see a live person who can answer their questions.”

The People’s Bank branch in Jacksonville offers full-service banking, including opening new accounts, bank teller services and consumer, mortgage and business loans, the company said.

Beattie said the branch serves consumers, as well as members of the local business community.

“We have available a commercial lending officer who can meet at the branch or at their business site in Jacksonville,” she said.

Branch hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays.

The new People’s Bank branch is managed by Maria Garcia, branch service officer. She was the assistant branch manager for the Umpqua Bank branch that closed in Jacksonville, according to People’s Bank.

Garcia brings over 16 years of banking experience to People's Bank and is a dedicated community supporter, the company said.

The new Jacksonville location is the 10th branch for Medford-headquartered People’s Bank.

People’s Bank has other branches in Medford, Ashland, Central Point, Grants Pass and Klamath Falls. Last year, it expanded into Northern Oregon market with branches in Albany, Lebanon and Salem.
