Firefighters investigating cause of fire at Relax Inn

Traffic was backed up on North Riverside Avenue late Thursday afternoon as firefighters from the city of Medford — including the department’s firefighters in training — and personnel with the Jackson County Fire Station No. 3 were working to extinguish a fire in the attic of Relax Inn of Medford, located at 1102 North Riverside Ave.

The fire was first reported at 4:39 p.m. Only one firefighting vehicle could be pulled into the parking lot of the motel since space was limited, according to the Medford Fire Department.

Law enforcement had been controlling traffic approaching the location because of the fire on the three-lane, one-way street. North Riverside is now open after having been reduced to a single lane earlier in the evening.

After the motel was evacuated, emergency vehicles lined both sides of the street as residents and other spectators watched from various locations nearby.

The fire’s cause is under investigation, however the preliminary cause appears to have been electrical, according to MFD Deputy Fire Marshal Tanner Fairrington.
