Fire investigators are still piecing together what caused a rural residential home fire near White City, and an ensuing quarter-acre grass fire.

A fire at the two-story home in the 3900 block of East Antelope Road was spotted at 4:24 p.m. Thursday on Alert Wildfire cameras on Long Mountain, according to a news advisory issued Friday morning by Jackson County Fire District No. 3.

Crews from District 3, Medford Fire Department, Lake Creek Fire and the Oregon Department of Forestry Southwest Oregon arrived on scene to find the home fully involved and spreading to nearby vegetation.

ODF crews — aided by a type 2 initial attack helicopter — were able to contain the wildfire at a quarter acre.

As of Friday morning, the cause of the fire was still under investigation.

Defensible space around the home helped keep the fire from spreading to steep terrain, according to Fire District 3. Also helping firefighters was the resident’s participation in Fire District 3’s Community Connect program, which the fire department said “helped our crews get quick insight on their way to the scene.”

Community Connect allows homeowners to volunteer information about the property, pets on site, residents and any possible mobility needs that firefighters may need to know in the event of a rescue. For information about Community Connect, see communityconnect.io/info/or-firedistrict3.
