East Vilas Road section to close Monday for 5 weeks
A section of East Vilas Road between Crater Lake Avenue and McLoughlin Drive north of Medford will close for five weeks starting Monday.
The public should be prepared to detour around the construction via Corey Road. The East Vilas Road section will remain open to local traffic to serve businesses and residents on the road, the Jackson County Roads and Parks Department said.
The work is part of a complete rebuild of East Vilas Road between Crater Lake Avenue and Foothill Boulevard. The project totaling more than $5 million started in April and is scheduled to be finished by the end of the year, the department said.
“The project will soon be completed this fall, and construction will be behind us. We are excited for the project to be complete, and travelers will be happy with the much-needed improvements,” said Jackson County Roads and Parks Director Steve Lambert.
During phase one of the project earlier this year, drivers saw a temporary closure on the east portion of the project area, which has been reopened for the past several weeks. Work is now moving to the west section of East Vilas Road, the department said.
Closures will not affect the heavily traveled section of East Vilas Road between Highway 62 and Table Rock Road, the department said.
The road is getting a cement-strengthened base, plus 7-foot-wide paved shoulders. The shoulders will provide a safer place for bicyclists and pedestrians using the road, along with space for drivers who veer off over the white fog line to correct their steering and get back on the road, the department said.
