By any other name
This is in reference to the article in the Sunday, Nov. 3 Mail Tribune titled, “By any other name”.
Apparently, Margo Schembre and Alice Knotts, neither of whom live in the Rogue Valley, consider their opinions as overriding factors in changing the names of a variety of landmarks. In the case of the mountain named after Ben Johnson, have we witnessed an outpouring of sentiment to make a change? Are African-American groups mobilizing to demand the change that Schembre recommends? Not so you’d notice it.
As for Knotts, who has recommended changes to existing names or naming unidentified locations, are there demands by Native American groups or tribes to delete the moniker, “Dead Indian” on the ones she mentions? Not so you’d notice it.
So, here’s a recommendation for these two ladies: Concentrate on issues in the area in which you live and leave those of us who do live in the Rogue Valley to address issues as they become issues.
Golfing while California burns
It is apparently not true that the Roman Emperor Nero played his fiddle while Rome burned in the conflagration of AD 64, although there does seem to be credible evidence that Nero ordered the fire started to clear space for a huge statue of himself.
In present times our would-be emperor plays golf while California burns, turns a blind eye to glaciers melting and ignores overwhelming evidence that the whole world is heating due to human actions. He is the denier-in-chief of climate change and really should be impeached for that crime above all others.
I’m sure that our would-be emperor would love to have his opponents assassinated just as Nero was able to do. His staff continues to desert him in record numbers to be replaced by toady sycophants, like Pompeo and Barr. They, like their boss, took an oath to support the Constitution, but instead support the would-be- emperor and his mentor Vladimir Putin.
They want to blame poor, beleaguered Ukraine for interfering in our 2016 presidential election when everyone knows it was Putin, the Russian oligarchs and their minions and they’ll do it again if we let them.
Opposite of progress?
If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of progress? We need help!
