Letters, Sept. 4

Appropriate definition

I’ve long since forgotten the context, but I remember a discussion from years back in which an attempt was being made to come up with an appropriate definition for “pornographic.” One suggestion was “having no redeeming social value.”

Years later, I think this definition perfectly fits Donald Trump.

Doomsday scenario for the Dems

Are the Democrats oblivious or just Nero fiddling while Rome burns?

Tom Clancy couldn’t write a better novel then the scenario that will play out in November, courtesy of the Republicans’ most formidable ally, mail-in voting.

And guess who will be mailing ballots in this November? Why, the Democrats, of course, driven in part by COVID-19 fears. The USPS will be crushed by the sheer volume of mail-in ballots . And Louis DeJoy has “no plan” for handling this avalanche, per his Senate testimony.

The Republicans have a vested interest in doing nothing at this point, other than getting Republican voters to the polls. Sean Hannity recently said “The safest way to make your vote count is to go to the polls.” Which they will, and the Democrats will largely vote by mail.

On election night Trump will be ahead in the popular vote. The Republicans will then trigger legal action to discredit many mail ballots, and the election may ultimately wind up being decided by the U.S. Supreme Court, with a predictable outcome!

The Democrats should “mask up” and go to the polls where they can and mail ballots early where they must!

Police officers are essential

We are fortunate in the Rogue Valley to enjoy highly professional and outstanding law enforcement. Our local police officers are characterized by a high level of training as well as devotion to duty, integrity and loyalty to the community.

The interesting thing is that our police officers form what could be considered a microcosm reflecting similar excellence and professionalism throughout the larger fabric of the United States as a whole. Most law enforcement officers in our country serve with honor. They are a credit to their communities.

Think about where we would be without the “thin blue line” of police officers to protect us. When we talk about “essential employees”, police officers should be at the top of our list.
