A pleasure and a challenge
What a pleasure it was, as well as a challenge, to hear on TV a few minutes of the speech President Obama gave in honor of Nelson Mandela. President Obama commented on the perilous plight of democracy at the present time, when those in power care nothing for God or country and treat truth as an inconvenience they can side-step.
However, President Obama urges us not to resort to cynicism but to remember that democracy has overcome even greater dangers in the past. The ideal of democratic government has always needed to be protected an defended by honorable people. We must remember with reverence and gratitude those who gave “the last full measure of devotion” to the cause. And now it’s our turn to be called to do all we can to guarantee that “government of the people by the people for the people shall not perish from the earth.”
