Editor's Note: This is the second in a two-part series — highlighting summer camp opportunities for children.

Although the temperature has throttled into the high-90s, — kids still need a place to expend all of that energy that comes with the — freedom of summer. With almost 30 different athletic summer programs in — the Ashland area, kids can build skills and strength in their sports specialties — or try something completely new just for the fun of it.

Most camps pair youngsters with collegiate or high school — varsity athletes who have had

successful athletic endeavors for years and know what — they're talking about. The Daily Tidings compiled a listing of all athletic — camps in the Ashland area through the end of August.

General

Southern Oregon University assistant football coach James — Gravelle will direct an individualized strength and conditioning class — in two four-week sessions. The camp is open to youth and high school athletes — preparing for fall sports. For more information, call 541-552-6189.

The YMCA will offer a coed sports camp July 5 to 9 for — athletes in grades one to five. Participants will enjoy sports and games, — such as flag football, softball, basketball, volleyball, soccer and slip — 'n' slide. The cost is $60 to $75. For more information, call 541-482-9622.

Basketball

Southern Oregon University's women's basketball program — will have two day camps for girls in kindergarten to grade 12 at McNeal — Pavilion. Camps will run July 14 to 18 and July 26 to 30 and will be headed — by Raider players and coaches. The SOU men's basketball program will have two day camps — staffed by Raider players and coaches for boys in kindergarten to grade — eight. The first camp will be June 14 to 18 at Ashland Middle School and — focuses on fundamental skills. The second camp, July 12 to 16, will be — at McNeal Pavilion and aims to be more team-oriented. The Ashland Grizzly Summer Basketball Camp for players — ages 8 to 14 will be June 28 to July — at Ashland High School. Players — ages 8 to 11 will go from 8 to 11 a.m., while the older players will go — from noon to — p.m. The cost is $65 per camper with a family rate of $35 — for each additional camper. The Ashland Family YMCA will have two coed basketball — camps for players in kindergarten to grade six. Camps will be July 12 — to 16 and August 16 to 20. Children will be grouped by age and ability — to work on passing, shooting, dribbling and defense. Cost is $60 to $75. — For more information, call 541-482-9622.

Football —

SOU will host a football team camp Sunday to Thursday — at Raider Stadium. Ten teams have already committed, but the camp is still — open to teams or individual high school players. The 20th annual Ashland Football Camp for players in grades — four to nine will be July 12 to 16 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Ashland High School. — The camp focuses on offensive and defensive football skills that are taught — by the AHS coaching staff. For more information, call 482-2377.

Gymnastics/Tumbling

The YMCA will offer a coed cheer and tumble camp for kids — in kindergarten to grade eight. Participants will be grouped by age to — learn how to stunt, jump, cheer and tumble. Rock Climbing

The Ashland Youth Climbing Program will offer a Beginners — Bouldering Camp for students in the sixth grade and above. The camp will — be Aug. 16 to 20 at the SOU climbing wall and Acid Castle. The cost is — $75. For more information, call 541-840-7245.

Scuba Diving

Soccer

The Grizzly soccer team will host two training camps this — summer, Monday to Friday and July 19 to 23. The camps will be headed by — Eisa Tia Toutou, a B license coach and the varsity head coach of the Ashland — High boys' soccer team.

Fuego also will have a soccer camp in July. The camps — will be staffed by Fuego players and directed by Fuego head coach Radovan — Dluhy-Smith, a B license coach and former European Division 2 player. — The camp will be July 12-16. Volleyball

The 27th annual Raider Volleyball Camp will be Aug. 8 — to 12 at McNeal Pavilion. The camp, open to players in grades 6 to 12, — will be staffed by SOU volleyball coaches as well as current and former — players. Costs range from $190 to $305. The SOU wrestling program will offer a comprehensive training — camp July 11 to 15 for wrestlers ages 14 and older. The camp aims to teach — young men the techniques, attitudes and discipline to be successful. The Raider wrestling program also will offer a multilevel — technique and goal-setting camp for wrestlers ages 10 to 17.
