Songs of Bernstein and Sondheim
As part of the fundraising for its education outreach program, the Southern Oregon Repertory Singers hold an occasional Repertory Repartee in which a handful of SORS members and friends gather for an intimate evening of music. The second in the series, "An Evening with Bernstein and Sondheim: Friends in Life and Music," is slated for 8 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at Rogue Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 87 Fourth St., Ashland.
The moderator for the evening is Doyne Mraz. Mraz has assembled an evening of information and personal stories highlighting selections from Stephen Sondheim's "Company," "Merrily We Roll Along," "Into the Woods" and "A Little Night Music," and Leonard Bernstein's "On the Town," "Trouble in Tahiti" and "Mass," as well as "West Side Story" and "Candide" with music by Bernstein and lyrics by Sondheim.
Performing the musical selections will be Repertory Singers Donnelly Fenn, Dennis Funk, Colleen Graves, Joelle Graves, Roger Graves, Linda Hawkes, Marcia Katzmar, Tami Marston, Don Matthews, Chris Phillips, Alice Turner, Tom Walker and Michael Wing. Tricia Leines and Erik Connelly will be the featured guest artists for the evening, recreating their starring roles in "Candide" and "West Side Story."
Jodi French on piano and Stu Turner on bass will accompany the singers. The evening will include a wine and cheese reception.
Tickets are $25 and are available in advance by calling 552-0900 or at the door. The group's education outreach program helps to promote high-quality choral music and to advocate for lifelong choral singing by visiting Rogue Valley public schools.
