YMCA exceeds donation goal
The Rogue Valley Family YMCA raised $160,948, exceeding the $150,000 goal for this year's YMCA Strong Communities campaign. The finale was shared with more than 2,000 kids and families participating in the Pear Blossom Festival Mayor's Cup Fun Run on April 9.
Twenty schools joined in and the Medford Montessori School won for the largest participation. The Medford mayor and Miss Jackson County gave out cash prizes and gift certificates so the winning schools can purchase sports equipment.
The campaign donations go directly to the YMCA Financial Assistance program to help local youths and families in need. Last year, the Y gave out more than $245,000 in scholarships to 600 families.
Even more scholarships are available for YMCA Summer Camp which includes Day Camp, Overnight Camp and lots of Specialty Camps thanks to Lithia Motors, which donated $10,000.
The YMCA also will organize middle school sports if the Medford School District cuts the program. The YMCA has a history of organizing sports and offers basketball, volleyball, flag football and track and field for elementary youth. More sports scholarships are available thanks to Sherm Olsrud who contributed $10,000.
