The Winchester Inn Wine Bar

Cuisine and scene: Comfortable yet luxurious — like an overstuffed, leather chair — The Winchester Inn Wine Bar is the perfect spot to melt away the world's worries. Open until after midnight most days, it offers a post-performance refuge during play season and a year-round venue for sophisticated snacking from its bistro menu. Nestled in the front parlor of Ashland's most notable Victorian inn, the bar is lushly furnished in dark wood with walls the color of crushed grapes. Surprisingly small, it has seating for nine at intimate tables and six at the bar.

Recommended: Texas-raised antelope burgers and sliders; miniature Wellingtons of mushroom and filet mignon; butternut-squash bisque with candied pumpkin seeds.

Alternative diets: Vegetarian soup and salad, as well as some appetizers. Many organic ingredients and foods produced locally according to "principles of sustainability."

Beverages: Focus on wine has five times warranted the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence; encyclopedic list of local, other domestic and imported bottles and half-bottles is organized by varietal and origin; about a dozen wines available by the glass or in tasting flights; local, other domestic and imported, bottled beers; full bar.

Price range: Snacks and starters, $4 to $8, soups, $8; salad, $9; light entrees, $9 to $14. Add 18-percent gratuity for parties of six or more.

Extras: Weekly special events, including small-plates pairings; cellar-level Vintner's Room available for private parties; parking in city lot across Second Street.

Serving: From 4:30 p.m. daily.
