Pho Sur is Southeast Asian supreme in Phoenix
Cuisine and scene: This casual restaurant aims to ease Vietnamese food onto Southern Oregonians' palates. But we recommend diving right into its Southeast Asian specialties, such as pho, banh mi and fresh rice-paper rolls, which haven't populated many menus locally or in convincing renditions.
Recommended: The namesake noodle soup, especially the most authentic version with round and flank steaks, meatballs, fat brisket, shredded tripe and tendon in beef broth; also vegetable yakisoba; beef stir-fried with garlic and ginger; mango pudding and Vietnamese-style espresso served with sweetened condensed milk.
Alternative diets: Three vegetarian appetizers; tofu options on most salads and all Thai-style entrees; several Vietnamese-, and Japanese-style dishes prepared without meat; seafood choices are shrimp, calamari, scallops, salmon and fish balls.
Beverages: Regional and other domestic wines by the glass and bottle; imported, bottled beers; sodas, specialty teas and coffees.
Price range: Appetizers and salads, $6 to $8; noodles, $8 to $12; entrees, $8 to $11; desserts, $2.50 to $4
Extras: Sister restaurant with more upscale menu and oyster bar on Northeast Seventh Street in Grants Pass; Visa, MasterCard and Discover accepted; no checks; slightly tricky entrance to strip mall behind Jack in the Box on Highway 99 in Phoenix.
Serving: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
