Tasting Notes: Mihama Teriyaki Grill
Mihama Teriyaki Grill
Cuisine and scene: For 22 years strong, this popular spot has kept it simple. With counter service and no-frills furnishings, Mihama serves good, honest food in a setting reminiscent of cafeterias. Just across Siskiyou Boulevard from Southern Oregon University, the weekdays-only operation attracts students, professionals and retirees alike for its fair prices, wide variety and large portions. Many full plates could feed two people, particularly with "double" the choice of chicken or beef.
Recommended: When it's in the name, go for the house specialty — anything served with housemade teriyaki, including the chicken and tofu plates; also grilled snapper topped with ginger teriyaki; green salad with signature sesame vinaigrette; udon noodles in fish broth topped with tempura vegetables; tofu burger boasting a thick slab of marinated and grilled bean curd on a whole-wheat bun.
Alternative diets: Major emphasis on vegetarian and vegan options; extensive gluten-free menu and seafood selections.
Beverages: Domestic wines by the glass; domestic and imported, bottled beers; sake, sodas, juices, teas, coffee, dairy milk and rice "milk."
Price range: Entrees with rice, $5.35 to $11; "plate" entrees, $7.05 to $12.70; burgers, $3.95 to $6.95; udon, $5.30 to $7.90; salads, $7.05 to $8.85; side orders, 60 cents to $2.80.
Extras: Allow at least 10 to 15 minutes for orders to arrive; 25-cent fee per take-out container; cash, local checks, Visa, MasterCard and Discover accepted.
