Fremont-Winema wilderness hikes

Saturday, Aug. 16:Hike to Isherwood Lake in the Sky Lakes Wilderness (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.). Guided, seven-mile, round-trip hike will start at 10 a.m. at the Cold Springs Trailhead. The hike will take participants through dense lodgepole and mountain hemlock stands, wet lowlands and numerous lakes. Your guide will talk about the many uses and benefits of forests, the history of wilderness preservation and wilderness management practices. Reservations are required due to limitations on group size. Call the Klamath Ranger District at 541-885-3400.

KS Wild

Saturday, Aug. 9: Moderate hike to explore a portion of the Marble Mountains of Northern California. A carpool will meet at the Ashland Outdoor Store at 9 a.m. Space is limited. To sign up, call Morgan at 541-488-5789. See more at www.kswild.org

Applegate Trails Association

Sunday, Aug. 24: 5.5-mile hike to Sturgis Meadow and Mount Elijah in an overlooked corner of the Siskiyou Mountains. The foray into this unprotected wilderness will take you along a mountain brook and through stately forests to the flower-filled expanses of Sturgis Meadow's subalpine area, along a view-filled ridge above the bluffs of Bigelow Lake's basin, and on to the summit of Mount Elijah. With 1,350 feet of elevation change, this hike is rated difficult. Hikers should wear appropriate clothing for the weather and sturdy footwear. Bring adequate water and leave your pets at home. Lithia Park Nature Walks

Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays: Ashland Parks and Recreation hosts guided walks through Lithia Park at 10 a.m. The walks last about an hour and a half and cover a variety of topics about the park. Meet at the park entrance at the Ashland Plaza. No preregistration required. Free. Call 541-488-5340.

Siskiyou Velo rides

Some of the club rides listed below are leisurely; others intense. Choose one that's right for you. All rides include rest stops for coffee and social time. All riders are required to have safe bikes, wear helmets and carry a spare tube/tools and water. Instruction on safe riding and group ride etiquette are available on all rides.

Every Saturday: Velo Slo-Mo rides begin at various morning hours from different locations. Pace: 7 to 10 mph over 12 to 18 miles on mostly flat terrain. Contact Phil Gagnon at 541-488-4289.

Every Saturday: Brisk rides begin at various morning hours from different locations. Pace: 19 to 23 mph over 50 to 65 miles on mostly hilly terrain. Contact Dennis Cramer at 541-773-5804.

Every Saturday: VeloShip rides begin at various morning hours from different locations. The rides are for experienced riders who wish to ride at a moderate average pace (14-16 mph); 30 to 60 miles, some hills. Contact Wayne Evitts at 541-816-0007.

Every Saturday: VeloMello rides begin at various morning hours from different locations. 20 to 25 miles, Rides are easy pace (10-13 mph) and terrain with frequent stops to regroup. No one will be dropped. Mostly flat, neighborhoods and country roads. Contact Elaine Sweet at 541-482-8332.

Every Monday: Coffee rides begin at 9:30 a.m. at Colver Park in Phoenix and go to Jacksonville. Pace: 17 mph average over 25 miles. Contact Ray Forsyth at 541-245-0312.

Every Wednesday: Coffee rides begin at 10:30 a.m. at Rogue Valley Roasting Company in Ashland. Pace: 17 mph average over 35 to 60 miles with some hills. Contact John Bullock at 541-488-7962.

Rogue Valley Audubon Society

Wednesday, Aug. 6: On the first Wednesday of every month, RVAS conducts a bird walk at Agate Lake, about two miles east of the Highway 62/140 intersection. Birders should meet at the parking lot on the far side of the lake across from the boat dock. The walk begins at 8:30 a.m. and will end before noon. This is an ongoing citizen-science project to record the numbers of the different species observed by the walk participants. You don't need to be an experienced birder to join in, but taking part will help you become one. Coordinator and leader of the walk is Murray Orr (541-857-9050, mworr2@charter.net). Hiking-book authors talk

Sunday, Aug. 10: Art Bernstein and Zach Urness, authors of a new hiking guide called “Hiking Southern Oregon,” will talk about their travels at 7 p.m. at the former Headwaters Building, 84 Fourth St., Ashland. The book is the result of three years of hiking, mapping, writing and lots of driving to highlight a mixture of kid-friendly journeys and challenging adventures. Each hike has a color map, photos, mile-by-mile directions and GPS coordinates to help reach places not always easy to find. For details, call Northwest Nature Shop at 541-482-3241.
