Churches, synagogs host seasonal events

Christmas services at Grace Bible Church

Grace Bible Church will offer a Community Carol Sing at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, at 303 E. Main St., Talent. The service will include songs, readings and music of the season.

Hanukkah Party at Temple Emek Shalom

Temple Emek Shalom will celebrate the fifth night of Hanukkah from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at 1800 E. Main St., Ashland. Events will include arts and crafts for children, a Havdallah ceremony, a Hannukiah lighting, a potluck dinner, and an all-ages storytelling event. Attendees should bring their own Hannukiah with six candles, and a vegetarian potluck dish to share. Admission is a suggested donation of $10 to $20 per family to help cover costs. Hanukkah Faire set for the Havurah Synagogue

Rabbi David Zaslow and the Havurah community will hold its annual Hanukkah Faire at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at 185 N. Mountain Ave., Ashland. Events will include a community candle lighting, a storytelling with Debra Zaslow, and a Hanukkah sing-a-long, dreidle spinning, beeswax candle rolling and face-painting. Hot latkes with trimmings will be sold. Participants are encouraged to bring their own menorahs for the candle lighting. Admission is free. Call 541-488-7716.

Seasonal events scheduled at St. Mark's

St. Mark's Episcopal Church will hold worship services at 8 and 10 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, at 140 N. Oakdale Ave., Medford. A forum presented by the church's Outreach Committee will convene between the two services at 9:10 a.m. A Greening of the church will follow at 11:15 a.m.

A Darkest Night service will be offered at 4 p.m. Sunday at the church. The service is meant for those who are grieving or who have a hard time dealing with loss of loved ones during the holidays.

Carolers will meet at 4:15 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, at the church. The carolers will greet shut-in members of the church. Following will be a soup supper at the parish hall. Call 541-773-3111 or see www.stmarks-medford.org.

Services at Medford First Presbyterian

Pastor Murray Richmond will present his sermon "Love Came Down at Christmas" during services at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, at First Presbyterian Church of Medford, 85 S. Holly St. An informal service is offered at 8:30 a.m., and the traditional service with full choir and pipe organ music will be at 10:30 a.m.

MCUCC explores significance of Mother Mary

The Rev Kurt Katzmar will examine the significance of Mary the mother of Jesus for Protestants during the Advent service at 10 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, at Medford Congregational United Church of Christ, 1801 E. Jackson St., Medford. A progressive Sunday Church School program is offered for elementary and middle school students during the service.

"The Jesus Fatwah," an adult study group exploring Islam, will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, and 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, at the church.

A Christmas Eve service begins at 7 p.m. The service will include choirs, a brass band and communion. Call 541-772-8860.

Unity in Ashland celebrates Winter Solstice

The Rev. Norma Nakai Burton will celebrate Winter Celtic Solstice during the Unity in Ashland service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, at the Havurah, 185 N. Mountain Ave. See www.unityashland.com.

Center for Spiritual Living service

Neale Donald Walsch, Interim Spiritual Director for the Center for Spiritual Living Rogue Valley, will give a sermon "The birth of The Savior in all of us" at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, at 3581 Lear Way, Medford. Meredith McFadden will serve as guest musician, and a children's program is offered during the service. Butte Creek Baptist services

Butte Creek Baptist Church will hold its worship service at 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, at 429 N. Royal Ave., Eagle Point. Child care is provided.

Advent services at Christ Unity Church

The Rev. Rob Wheeler will give a sermon recognizing the fourth Sunday of Advent on the theme of Joy at 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, at Christ Unity Church, 540 N. Holly St., Medford. Children's Sunday school is offered during the service.

Silent Unity Prayer Services are offered at 11 a.m. Wednesdays at the church. A metaphysical Bible discussion will follow at 11:30 a.m.

RVUUF solstice and Christmas Eve services

The Rev. Nan White will give a sermon about winter solstice at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, at Rogue Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 87 Fourth St., Ashland.

The fellowship will hold a joyful Christmas Eve service at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24. Events will include the singing of carols and telling Christmas stories. The service will close with candles and the singing of "Silent Night."

Blue Christmas service at First Presbyterian

First Presbyterian Church of Ashland will offer a Blue Christmas service at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, at the church sanctuary, 1615 Clark Ave., Ashland. The service is geared for those who find themselves sad and overwhelmed by the holiday season, and this gentle service will include music, candle lighting, scripture, poetry and prayer. Christmas Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church

Sacred Heart Catholic Church will offer Christmas Mass services in English at 4:30, 7 and 11:30 p.m. Chrismas Eve, and 8:30 a.m. Christmas Day, at 517 W. 10th St., Medford.

Spanish language Mass services are offered at 9 p.m. Christmas Eve, and 10:15 a.m. Christmas Day.
