Religion briefs: Friday, April 29

Archangel Gabriel Orthodox Church

Royal Hours will be read for Great and Holy Friday at 8 a.m. Friday, April 29, at Archangel Gabriel Orthodox Church, in the Shoppes at Exit 24, 205 Fern Valley Road, Suite Z, Phoenix. Vespers with the Shroud of Christ will begin at 4 p.m., then Matins with Lamentations at 6 p.m. There will be Psalm readings through the night. On Holy Saturday, April 30, the Vesperal Liturgy of St. Basil the Great begins at 9 a.m., followed by Holy Baptism at 11 a.m. The Book of Acts will be read by parishioners beginning at 8 p.m. At 11:30 p.m., the Midnight Office will precede the Paschal Easter celebration, which starts at midnight Sunday, May 1, including Divine Liturgy followed by blessing of Easter baskets and breaking the fast with a potluck feast. Agape Vespers will be served at 4 p.m. followed by the parish picnic and egg hunt.

Medford Congregational United Church of Christ

A rummage sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, April 29, and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 30, in Lidgate Hall at Medford Congregational United Church of Christ, 1801 E. Jackson St., Medford..

The Rev. Kurt Katzmar will preach at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 1.  Communion will be served. Church school for youth kindergarten through middle school is offered during service. A study of Eckhart Tolle’s "The Power of Now" is at 7 p.m. Mondays through May 23. “Embracing Spiritual Awakening" is at 11 a.m. Tuesdays. Call 541-772-8860.

St. Mark's Episcopal Church

Holy Eucharist will be held at 8 and 10 a.m. Sunday, May 1, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 140 N. Oakdale Ave., Medford. At 9:15 a.m., following coffee, Kit Nilles will give an update on the nursery and classroom renovation. Children’s Sunday school is at 10 a.m. in the parish hall classroom.

First Presbyterian Church, Medford

Pastor Murray Richmond's message is "A Love Not Affected By Distance" at an 8:30 a.m. informal service and 10:30 a.m. traditional service Sunday, May 1, at First Presbyterian Church, 85 S. Holly St., Medford. 

The informal service features contemporary music while the traditional service has a full Chancel Choir and pipe organ music. The Handbell Choir will perform and the Chancel Choir’s anthem will be “At The Table Of Our God” by Douglas E. Wagner. The organ postlude will be “The Rejoicing” by Handel. Ascension Lutheran Church

Worship begins at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, May 1, at Ascension Lutheran Church, 675 Black Oak Dr., Medford. Education for all ages begins at 10:45 a.m.

A book sale to benefit the SMART Reading Program will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, May 1. Bring a bag to fill. Books will be sold for $5 a bag. Proceeds will be used to purchase new books for children participating in the SMART program.
