Concert to raise money for community meals program
A concert and fundraiser to support an Ashland community meals program will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, at Pioneer Hall, 73 Winburn Way, Ashland.
The Ashland Community Peace Meal, which provides meals and resources for people in need, is looking to expand its services and establish a community kitchen in Ashland, according to a press release. The group organizes a free community meal every Friday at 5 p.m. in Pioneer Hall, and the program connects people with volunteers, resources and services.
The concert, by singer and composer George Mann, will begin after Friday's meal. The community kitchen project hopes to create a space for volunteers to store and prepare food, a place for training in culinary skills and a space suitable for the commercial preparation of food.
"Having regular access to healthy food goes a long way in helping to begin to stabilize people, and we're able to do that thanks to the dozens of community volunteers who help," project coordinator Vanessa Houk said in the release. "Volunteers are cooking, serving and supporting meals five days a week in Ashland. This ensures that there's a meal every day of the week, and lately that adds up to about 300 meals a week."
