Ashland Lions helping to improve quality of life

Ashland Lions Community Service

Ashland Lions & Southern Oregon Lions Sight & Hearing Center — Improving quality of life. Working together lives are enriched through the ability to see better. If you see one of the yellow boxes as shown in the picture please deposit all unused eyeglasses. Here is what we do with the donated glasses.

“Recycle for Sight”: Eyeglasses collected in the “Lions Yellow Containers” are given to Southern Oregon LIONS Sight & Hearing Center where they are sorted. The usable glasses are used by the Center for dispensing at the annual “Community Vision Clinics.”.Glasses that cannot be used or need repairing are then sent to Coffee Creek Women’s Correctional Facility where inmates have the opportunity learn “reading glasses for prescriptions” on a lensometer. Glasses are then packaged by Oregon LIONS Sight & Hearing Foundation for overseas mission trips.

Ashland Lions donate $50 per person, Ashland residents, up to a total of $1,000 annually. Funding is grants and donations.

What does the Southern Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Center do? Provides financial assistance for eye exams, eyeglasses, hearing exams, and hearing aids to low income people in need. Recycles donated eyeglasses for use at Community Vision Clinics held annually. Recycles donated hearing aids.

Ashland Lions & C.A.S.T. For Kids: The C.A.S.T. for Kids event is designed to create an adaptive environment where children, ages 6-18 and adults can both benefit by sharing a day of fun on the water that they may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience.

Through a joyful day of fishing, kids, their families and community volunteers come together for an explosion of fun and inspiration. C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation hosts annual fishing and boating events across America to fulfill its mission of providing populations with special needs the opportunity to enjoy a quality outdoor recreational experience fishing on the water.

Participants are hosted at a local lake, or body of water, supplied with a fishing rod and reel, T-shirt, hat and tackle box, partnered with an experienced volunteer angler and escorted onto a boat where — with the supervision of a parent or guardian — they are shown proper fishing techniques and receive natural resources education. Participants and volunteers then return from their morning fishing excursion to a barbecue lunch and an awards ceremony.

Goals of the C.A.S.T. for Kids program: Expose children, who may not otherwise get the opportunity, to the sport of fishing and the enjoyment of the outdoors. Encourage continued participation in fishing by developing skills in the children along with their parents. Provide education and understanding to children about fish as a natural resource. Increase the awareness of all participants, parents, sportsmen, and volunteers, to the capabilities of children with disabilities, in effect strengthening local communities.

The Ashland Lions support C.A.S.T. by providing hamburgers and hot dogs that they barbecue for the annual event. 2019 is the third year for the Lions and this event.
