Ice fishing workshop at Lake of the Woods

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is planning an ice-fishing workshop at Lake of the Woods Feb. 19 and 20.

The course will provide all the knowledge you need to fish on the ice, from how to start, where to go, how to read the ice, what gear to get and how to use it, and how to process your catch. Fishing techniques will focus on targeting yellow perch.

ODFW will have all the equipment you need, but if you have your own fishing equipment you are welcome to bring it and ODFW can show you how to use it.

Sign-in begins at 7 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19. The workshop will run until 3 p.m., with breakfast snacks and lunch provided. ODFW staff will be available again Sunday, Feb. 20, from 7 a.m. to noon if participants wish to continue developing their ice-fishing skills, but this is an optional day and meals will not be provided.

Each participant must have a valid angling license if you are 12 or older. All participants 17 and younger must be accompanied by a registered adult 21 or older.

Bring a cooler if you would like to keep fish (a bucket will be given to each participant to carry fish and gear on the ice but may not be the best method of transporting fish home). A detailed email of the plan of the day and further instructions will be provided after registration.

The workshop is dependent on ice conditions. If for any reason it is unsafe to conduct the event, each participant will be notified ASAP and refunded their participation fee if attending an alternative date is not feasible.

The workshop costs $35. The registration deadline is Feb 18. The organizer is Amanda Boyles. For information, email amanda.m.boyles@odfw.oregon.gov or call 503-580-5102.
