A mirth provoking incident of last Saturday night’s run of the fire department to a flue fire on West Tenth street was the balling out given Chief Lawton by Fireman Gus Peterson. The chief was on Main street in Olen Arnspiger’s car waiting to take Mrs. Arnspiger and children home from a moving picture show when the fire alarm sounded and the apparatus came by on the run.

Naturally he fell in behind the hose truck on the rear of which Peterson was riding, and drove his car closely behind it. Just the day before the firemen were talking about auto drivers who disobey the ordinance forbidding any vehicle driving within 100 feet of the fire apparatus, and Chief Lawton had then told Peterson and the others to keep a good lookout, and they would make an arrest and stop the practice.

As the hose truck sped on followed closely by the chief Saturday night, Peterson who could not recognize him on account of the auto’s light shining in his eyes waved him back unavailingly, and then shouted, “Get back there! Go back, you old stiff! Back I say! I’ll have you pinched!”

But the chief kept on coming and Peterson kept getting madder. Finally the irate fireman nearly beside himself with rage at the impudence of the auto driver let loose a flow of language used by all self respecting firemen in times of great stress and emergency, and kept it up until they reached the scene of the fire when he had to jump off with the hose and get busy otherwise.

After the excitement was over and the firemen were about to return to the engine house, Peterson spied the offending auto with the driver gone. He called the other firemen and they went to take the number of the car intending to cause the arrest of the driver Monday morning, when someone recognized the car as Arnspiger’s and they gave the plan up. It was not until later that night that Peterson learned that he had cussed his chief and threatened his arrest.


Court Hall and son have sold their interest in the Crater Lake Motor Co. to E. E. Waters of Oklahoma for $6,500.

In buying the Crater Lake Motor company Mr. Waters has purchased the largest automobile repair business between Portland and Sacramento. No change will be made in the present mechanics, and Seely V. Hall will be retained as foreman and chief mechanic. Several other mechanics will be added withing the next few days, one of them being Wm. Sullivan, a former Medford man who has left the Packard agency at Boise, Idaho, to report to the Crater Lake Motor company.

Mr. Waters is an experienced garage man and will endeavor to keep a sufficient force of mechanics to turn out work promptly.
