Arson suspected in fatal JoCo fire

Police are searching for clues in a deadly Cave Junction fire that investigators say was set intentionally.

Donald Thomas, 65, died in the blaze, which started just after midnight Wednesday at his home at 150 E. River St., according to a news release issued Friday by Oregon State Police.

Detectives with OSP’s Major Crimes and Arson unit are investigating reports that an unknown male was witnessed lighting a flare and throwing it in the home.

Firefighters found flames coming from the front and side of the single-story house after responding to a 911 call that came in at 12:02 a.m. Rescuers, which included Illinois Valley Fire District, Rural Metro Fire and American Medical Response paramedics, found Thomas deceased inside.

OSP does not have any further description of the person of interest at this time, according to an email from OSP Capt. Tim Fox.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call OSP at 1-800-442-2068 and reference case No. SP19-017772.
