Al Berman

Mr. Berman was born in Chicago, IL on . — He grew up in a family with five sisters. As a teenager, during the depression, — he was a founding member of the Roosevelt Sportsmen, a social group of — young men from the Chicago area. At the age of seventeen, in order to — help support his family he enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps — (CCC) and was sent to Tillamook, Oregon where he fought the historic Tillamook — fire. Mr. Berman is believed to be the last survivor of the crew that — fought the fire.

Returning to Chicago, he married Sarah Portnoy on June — 15, 1941. Sarah and Al had recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. — In 1948, Al and Sarah moved to Los Angeles, CA with their children. Al — was employed as a milkman for Carnation Milk, Co. until he and Sarah opened — Family Furniture, an antique and used furniture business in Tarzana, CA. — Mr. Berman was a Boy Scout Leader for a number of years with troup

118 — in Woodland Hills, CA.

In 1972, Al and Sarah moved to Ashland where Mr. Berman — served on the Ashland Street Commission. Al & Sarah opened As You Like — It Antiques on Pioneer Street in Ashland in 1974.

Al Berman enjoyed entertaining people by telling jokes — and reading from his two-volumes of heart-felt poetry. He liked testing — his latest system for winning on Reno Craps tables, but most of all, he — loved his wife, children and grandchildren. He was a founding member of — the Jewish congregation.

Al Berman is survived by his wife, Sarah of Ashland. Sister-in-law, — Loretta Lisowski of Ashland, sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Harriet — of Woodland Hills, CA. Mitch and Joan of Kula, HI. Daughter Elinor Berman, — daughter and son-in-law, Melody and Jeff Jones of Ashland, four grandchildren — and four great grandchildren.

Elsie Mary Gawiuk — A memorial service will be held for Elsie Mary Gawiuk on Tuesday, August — 31st, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church, Ashland, — OR. Father Joseph will officiate. A funeral mass will be held with reception — following.

Elsie Mary Gawiuk, 78, of Ashland, died peacefully Monday, — August 23, 2004 at Skylark Enhanced Care Center.

Elsie Mary Gawiuk was born July 16, 1926 in Saskatchewan, — Canada. She married Peter Gawiuk from Manitoba, Canada in 1948. They moved — to the United States in 1983 and settled in the Los Angeles area. After — the death of her husband, she moved to Southern Oregon in 1987.

She was an active member of Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic — Church. Elsie delighted in cooking, gardening, and working as a caregiver — for others.

Survivors include her daughter, Patricia Rambach of Ashland, — Son; Kenneth Gawiuk of Running Springs, CA. Two grandchildren; five sisters — and two brothers.

Carol Ann Landers — Carol Ann Landers, 54, of Ashland, died Sunday (Aug. 29, 2004) at a Medford — foster home. Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation — Center, Ashland.
