Neil W. Haller

Neil W. Haller, after an action-packed 67 years, passed on to another adventure on February 25, 2006. Surrounded by special people in his life, he died at his home in Ashland.

He was born in Hollywood, California, on, to Annabel and Robert Haller. Life-long friends were formed in the Saracen Club (sponsored by the YMCA) during his school years at Hollywood High. He graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara, creating lasting friendships with members of his fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

After working as a sales representative for Schlage Lock Company in Los Angeles, he retired at the age of 41, moving to Ashland, Oregon. His motto was, "Never be afraid to take the big risk."

39;s love of nature, animals and outdoor adventures defined him, along with his diverse artistic abilities. Painting, photography, wood carving, metal sculpturing, stained-glass work reflected just some of his talents.

An annual event for years was riding to the tip of Baja, California, on his dirt bike, with friends who also loved wild adventures. For a time, he owned a sailboat and explored the waters around Catalina Island in the "Sin or Swim." When he moved to Oregon, he took up white water rafting, which became a passion for the rest of his life. He loved hiking, bicycling, 4-wheel backroad trips, traveling, and anything involving nature and wildlife.

In 1996, he married Marle Jandreau, also of Ashland, and introduced her to recreation kayaking and a world of exciting adventures.

He is survived by his wife, Marle; his sister, Susan Armstrong; brother-in-law, Dave Armstrong; his niece, Lindsey Armstrong; his cousin, Rick Blanchard. He was a wonderful stepfather to Erik and Shannon Smit, Jason and Gabe Luban, and Victoria Schumacher, who also survive him, with adventurous memories to last three lifetimes.

A "Celebration of Life" for the ultimate "Putterer and Tinkerer and Master of Meander" will be held in the late Spring; friends will be notified. Because of his love of animals, donations may be made to the Jackson County Animal Care and Control, at 5595 South Pacific Highway, Phoenix, OR 97535, or any environmental group of choice. Neil supported The Nature Conservancy, The Audubon Society, The Natural Desert Association, National Wildlife Association, among many other programs to protect the Earth and life on it.
