Celia Hays

Celia Helena Hays, 97, died in her home on Pine Street in Central Point on April 8.

Celia was born in Shaniko, Oregon, August 3, 1908 to William and Daisy Rinehart, owners of the Shaniko Hotel. The family moved to Ashland where she grew up. She married childhood sweetheart James F. Hays on December 25, 1928 while attending Nursing Academy in San Francisco. In the early 1940s, after a brief mining career in Idaho, Jim and Celia owned and operated the Phoenix Cottage Court. Celia helped organize the local chapter of the Red Cross while Jim served two terms as Mayor of Phoenix.

Celia was a Registered Nurse and remained active in the Red Cross during her career in local hospitals and for many years after. The family moved to Central Point in 1952 where she continued to live. She was a main supporter of the Central Point Senior Center from 1980 to 2000.

Celia was preceded in death by her husband Jim, in 1978, by her sister Dolores and her brother Joseph. She is survived by son James, Jr., (Prospect) and Daniel W. Hays (Salem), daughters Miki Comstock and Donimique Weller, both of Medford, seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Her passions in life were small children and giving to others.
