Luella (Lu) McCarthy

Luella (Lu) McCarthy, 83, passed away on April 9, 2006, surrounded by family at her home in Grants Pass.

Visitation will be held 10:00-11:15 a.m., Thursday, April 13 at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Grants Pass, Funeral Mass to follow. Interment with Full Military Honors will be Friday, April 28 at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA.

Luella Helen McCarthy was born July 4, 1922 in Chicago, Ill. to Mary and Edward Dvorak.

On April 8, 1944 she married Joseph E. McCarthy in Chicago, Ill. During his military career they lived in many places throughout the world along with their three children, Sheila, Gregory and Holly. Mrs. McCarthy's warm and gracious personality made her an exceptional military wife; she was a wonderful hostess and loved to entertain. Colonel and Mrs. McCarthy retired to Grants Pass in 1968.

Mrs. McCarthy loved to garden and was a gourmet cook. During the 1960's and 70's she won many awards for her canned peaches, pickles and tomatoes. She was a talented seamstress and very artistic, especially in ceramics. She loved art and collected art from her many world travels after the death of her husband in 1981. She was an avid bridge player and was a member of St. Anne's Parish.

Mrs. McCarthy loved life and was loved by all whose lives she touched. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother and she will be remembered for her positive outlook and the way she faced life's challenges with courage and grace until the end.

Mrs. McCarthy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph in 1981, and grandson, Timon McCarthy in 1972.

Mrs. McCarthy is survived by daughters, Holly Connolly of Grants Pass; Susie Schmidt and husband, Kenny of Medford; grandchildren, Aedra Reynolds and husband, Rob of Eugene; Laura Wagner of Oklahoma City, Okla.; Christopher Pilcher of New York, N.Y.; and Samuel Schmidt of San Diego, Calif.; great grandchildren, Joseph McCarthy, James Reynolds, Jack Reynolds and Lydia Wagner.
