John Vernon Veteran

John Vernon Veteran was born on May 4, 1917 in Hollister, Calif., and died on November 28, 2005 at his home in Medford, Ore. with his family by his side. John was the second of five sons born to Florence Gates Veteran and James Joseph Veteran. He was raised in various towns around the San Francisco Bay area, where he made his home until moving to Medford upon retirement in 1982.

John was an Army lieutenant during WWII, a graduate of the Univ. of Calif. at Berkeley and received an MBA from Stanford Univ. He was an executive at Hewlett-Packard for 30 years, starting with the company when there were less than 200 employees.

John met the love of his life, Judy Cary Stone, when they were both serving in the Army, and married her in 1945. They were together until her death in 2001.

John was an adventurer who loved life. Over the years he owned many boats and cabins, loved to fish, golf and shoot pool with his buddies, and always found the fun. He traveled extensively, and one of his favorite things was getting into the car and exploring back mountain roads. He never said a derogatory word about anyone, and shared his love of life with all.

John is survived by two daughters, Sandra V. Abell and husband, Gene of Medford, and Deborah V. Kostal and husband, Gene of Castro Valley Calif.; one stepdaughter, Jean McPherson, of Fruitland Park, Fla.; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and brothers, James Veteran of Campbell, Calif., and David Robert Veteran of Santa Rosa, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Len and Herb.

A Memorial Service for John will be held at the Eagle Point National Cemetery on Monday, May 8th at 11:15.
