Deolinda Mable Smith, loving wife of Edward F. Smith, departed earth ties and went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and her husband, who recently predeceased her. Linda, as she was called, passed away at Waterford at Three Fountains, Medford, on May 6, 2006 at about 11:30 a.m. Memorial services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m., May 10th in the Memory Gardens Chapel, 1395 Arnold Lane, Medford. Pastor Bill Gallagher of Cornerstone Christian Church, Medford, will conduct the service.
Deolinda was born on June 16, 1915 to Portuguese immigrant parents, Manuel Sousa Silva and Mariana Lopes Silva in Newman, Calif. She was baptized on the 10th day of July, 1915 at the Church of St. Joachim, Newman, Calif. The family attended the Newman Evangelical Church and Deolinda was awarded the Cross and Crown certificate of attendance in January, 1929. Linda attended school in Newman, Calif., receiving her diploma of 8th grade graduation on June 9, 1933. After her father's early death in 1932, the family sold their Gustine, Calif. dairy farm and relocated to Centerville District, now Fremont, Calif. where during World War II she met her husband and within a year they were married. Linda, her husband, and his three children of a prior marriage were long standing members of Newark Assembly of God Church. She loved singing the hymns and songs of the church. During World War II she worked as a "Riveter" for James Graham Mfg. Company, building pontoons and other materials needed in the war effort. Her husband was employed in the same shop in Newark, Calif. She also worked in the canneries and took in laundry. She lovingly raised his three children and was a devoted and loving wife to her husband. In 1991, Linda and Ed moved to Western Carriage Estates in Medford, Ore.
She is survived by her sister, Angie Silveria of Fremont, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Eleanore Silva of Sacramento, Calif. and Mary Smith of Fremont, Calif.; brother-in-law, Walter Lobato of Fremont, Calif. and Marvin Brannon of Redding, Calif.; sons, John Smith of Antioch, Calif. and Joseph Smith of Jamestown, Calif.; daughter, Patricia Miller of Medford, Ore.; and two extended family daughters, Pamala Freitas of Medford, Ore. and Tamara Saba of Mesa, Ariz. She had six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial donations can be sent to the Benevolent Fund, Cornerstone Christian Church, 608 N. Bartlett, Medford. Arrangements handled by Memory Gardens.
