Mattewillis Hisle-Beard

Mattewillis Hisle-Beard ("Twillis") left our care on Saturday May 27th at 2:00 in the afternoon, and was called home by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. After she received a diagnosis of Cancer in early 2006, we are grateful she then chose to be with her children. Her last months were spent truly enjoying the fellowship of her friends and family, who with the appreciated help of Hospice cared for her at home. She was loving mother to daughter Glorianne May Nicholson, and sons William HisleBeard and Keith Norman Beard.

Mattewillis was born on Jan 21, 1928 to Willis Minor Hisle and Edna May Hisle in Phoenix, Arizona. She was raised on Sundown Ranch in Prescott with her older brother William Hugh Hisle. Mattewillis had a keen appreciation of her horses, "Half Pint", her first love, and later "Peanut". She loved spending her youthful days galloping across ranches and exploring her way home. All her pets were a source of comfort and joy to her, a trait that would remain with her throughout her life.

She married Oliver Yates Beard on March 31, 1946 in Yavapai County, Arizona. At college her majors were Art and History. One of many gifts was a beautiful, almost two and a half octave singing voice, which she used with the Robert Wagner Chorale. In 1960, the family moved to Oregon and purchased a ranch in Phoenix. While riding a green broke horse Mattewillis was bucked off and her neck was broken. While recuperating she discovered additional gifts for writing and illustration, and became an accomplished artist and author.

Her passions were God, writing, and illustrating her books, her children, family and friends. She enjoyed lovingly tending her pets, trees and ornamentals at her Eagle Point home, and discussed plants, ranch life, horses, history, and architecture often. She also loved parties, cooking for her family, reading, classical and gospel music, and the great outdoors.

Mattewillis is survived by her daughter, Glorianne Nicholson and her husband, Bruce; her son, William HisleBeard and his wife, Lisa; her son, Keith Norman Beard; and her niece, Willa Ann Hisle and her husband, Al Ahumada. She also leaves longtime and valued friends and family, H. Dean Stout of Medford; Lauralee Ware of Portland; Paulette House of Medford; Gloria and Norman Graf of Hartford, Conn.; Judy Hisle of Sacremento; Joan Burk of Medford; and Anneliese Nicholson of Medford.

A memorial service will be held at Siskiyou Memorial Park at 4:00pm on Thursday, June 1st. Those wishing to honor her memory may do so by making a contribution to the Jackson County Animal Shelter, specifying that the gift be used to defray spay/neuter costs.
