Ken was born of pioneer parentage Auguest 17, 1913 in Albany, Ore. His great-grandparents' family came to Oregon on the Oregon Trail in 1853, settling in Linn County. His mother was a descendent of another Pioneer family, the Applegate's. He attended Hulburt School in Linn County which was named after his family because they provided land and financial help in establishing the school.

After graduating from Albany High School, he attended and graduated from Albany College, now Lewis and Clark College of Portland, with a Bachelors degree in secondary education.

On June 12, 1933 in Stevenson, Wash., Ken married his college sweetheart Lucille Dowing who preceded him in death on January 15, 1998. They were married for 64 years.

Ken was a teacher and boy's athletic coach at Central Point High School for seven years, and served in the same capacity at Tillamook High School for three years. In 1946, he came to Medford as principal of Washington Elementary School. Ten years later he transferred to the new Jefferson School where he served another ten years. In 1966, after 30 years of working in the public school system, he retired to help his wife operate their orchard on Coal Mine Road.

He was on the board of the Medford Rural Fire District in the 1970s and became active in the Oregon Fire District Directors Association. He was on the executive board for several years, and was State President for three terms.

After selling the orchard in 1978 the Hulburt's purchased a winter home in the desert of Yuma, Ariz., where they spent the succeeding winters until ill health forced the sale of their home.

Ken is survived by his son, Kenneth Hulburt II of Portland, Oregon.
