James Douglas Cain

James Douglas Cain, 84, of Spring Hill, formerly of Medford, Ore., died Monday, July 24, 2006 in Jacksonville, Fla., while visiting the Mayo Clinic.

He was born in Waxahachie, Tex., and he came to Spring Hill in 1981 by way of Medford, Ore., where he had lived for 34 years.

James was a business representative and Secretary-Treasurer of the Meat Cutters Union Local 324, President of the Jackson County Labor Council, and created the first ever pension plan for Oregon Meat Cutters. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a life member of Lodge 103, AF&AM, Medford, Scottish and York Rites, and a Hillah Temple Shriner.

He was a World War II veteran and he served in the Navy as Chief Water Tender aboard the heavy cruiser, U.S.S. Chester, (CA-27), and he participated in every major naval campaign in the Pacific.

A 100% disabled veteran, he was a memeber of the U.S. Navy Cruiser Sailors Association, and the Disabled Veterans of America.

His survivors include his wife of 61 years, Daisy; son, James Jr., of N.C.; daughter, Barbara of Wash.; grandson, Donald (Rick) Kent of Va.; granddaughter, Erika Mosley of Ga.; grandson, Mike Lanchester of Ore., and three great-grandsons of Georgia; Blaine, Damien and Jesse James.

A Memory Gathering will be held Tuesday, August 1, 2006 from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. at the Brewer & Sons Seven Hills Chapel, 280 Mariner Blvd., Spring Hill, Florida.

A Masonic funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. He will be laid to rest with full military honors at 12:30 p.m. at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell.
