Leila vanderMark Gilman Pendergast

Leila was born in Medford, Oregon, to Hazel and Henry vanderMark. She attended Medford schools and graduated from Good Samaritan School of Nursing in Portland, Oregon in 1937.
She married Lester Gilman October 5, 1938. They owned, worked hand in hand, and expanded the operation of Gilman's Dairy in Medford. They had three children: George, Susan, and Richard, who grew up working on the dairy.
Leila and Lester divorced in 1958. Leila worked as a registered nurse in Southern Oregon from 1938 through 1959. She was the first nurse to fly on Mercy Flights out of Medford. She did a lot of private duty.
Leila was a member of Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile and a member of the Medford Rose Society. She loved ballroom dancing and competed in many competitions.
From Medford, she moved to Drain, Oregon, and then to Lakeside, Washington. In late 1962 she moved to Carmel, California, and was in charge of setting up the infirmary at the newly built Hacienda Carmel, a retirement center. She also worked at Carmel Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. She then moved to the San Jose area and worked in nursing for the next twenty-nine years.
Leila married Sam Pendergast August 14, 1991. She retired in 1996 and they moved to Roseburg in 2000.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, Dr. Harry vanderMark, Marie Brown and Dorothy Stewart-Regan, her ex-husband, Lester Gilman, and granddaughter Debbie Sue Lind Jones.
She is survived by her husband, Sam Pendergast of Roseburg; sons, George (Sandy) Gilman of Medford, Richard Gilman of Central Point; and daughter, Susan (Ernest) Lind of Carmel, California. Grandchildren include: Grandsons, Fred (Ardelle) Lind of Coarsegold, California, Christopher Gilman, Jacksonville, Oregon; and granddaughters, Teresa Vonn of Trail, Oregon, and Lydia Gilman of Phoenix, Oregon.
Great grandchildren are Sara and Thomas Vonn, Trail, Oregon, Jed Lind of Marina, California, Josh and Dustin Lind of Coarsegold, California, Clinton and Jenny Jones of San Diego, California, and Ethan, Desi, Camille, and Brandy Lyman of Spring Valley, California.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 2, 2006 at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 2201 North Phoenix Rd at 2 p.m.
