Gerald T. Latham, 94, of Medford, Ore., passed away October 5, 2006. A funeral will be held on Monday, October 9, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Perl Siskiyou Funeral Home.
Gerald was born September 7, 1912 in Latham, Mo., to Ethel M. Smith and Peter C. Latham.
Gerald married Lois Lindsey on July 3, 1937 in Medford, Ore. They met while working at The Mail Tribune and continued working together for 50+ years.
Gerald was the former general manager of the Mail Tribune who was active in a slew of community organizations, including the original group that spearheaded Rogue River flood-control measures. He helped create the Rogue Basin Association, which advocated for dams - including Lost Creek Lake, Applegate and Elk Creek Dams - to rein in the Rogue River during winter floods.
He was also active in the formation of the regional sewage system, the Jackson County planning commission and setting aside money for county parks. Other activites included hospital fundraising, the chamber of commerce and many other civic and business organizations.
He worked at the Mail Tribune for 53 years, starting his career as a carrier in 1924 and retiring as general manager in 1977. He was named to the Oregon Newspaper Hall of Fame and participated in many industry organizations, such as the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association, the Pacific Northwest International Circulation Managers Association and the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Association.
Gerald was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Latham; and his twin sister, Geraldine Taylor.
He is survived by his daughters, Lynn Lane and Julie Vincent; grandsons, Brian McCoy and Brent Lane; granddaughters, Carrie McKeague and Sarah Baldwin; and three great-grandsons.
