Virgiline Jane Reed

Virgiline Jane Reed, wife of former Ashland Fire Chief William (Bill) Reed and mother of two children, passed away quietly at her Ashland home on Thursday, October 19, 2006. She had just recently celebrated her 82nd birthday.

Mrs. Reed was born September 26, 1924 in Grant County, Gore Township, Okla., to Virgil L. and Margaret Jane Trenton. On January 1, 1943, Virgiline married her high school sweetheart William Reed in Pond Creek, Okla., while Bill was home on furlough from military service.

In 1993 Virgiline and Bill celebrated 50 years of marriage. Virgiline and Bill moved to Ashland in 1947 and upon their arrival wrote to folks back home that Ashland was the most beautiful place on earth. Mrs. Reed was a devoted wife and mother. Through the years she and her husband were members of Grange, involved in the Ashland Wranglerettes and had season tickets to the Ashland Grizzly football games while good health allowed. She loved to watch football and basketball, always cheering for the underdog. Mrs. Reed loved people; she never met a stranger. She also loved gardening and bird watching.

Mrs. Reed is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Janell and Michael Steffl, and their two sons, Kristopher and Nathan, of Hillsboro, Ore.; also son, Jay Lee Reed of Ashland and his three children, sons, Jay Jr., and Jason, and daughter, Stevee Lee. She was preceded in death by her husband and one brother. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Wednesday, October 25, 2006 at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland. Interment will follow in Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland. Those who wish may pay their respects from 5:00-8:00 P.M., Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in honor of Virgiline J. Reed to Ashland Fire Department, 455 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland, OR 97520 for the restoration of the 1913 American LaFrance fire engine.
